The National Aviation Company of India Ltd, which operates under the Air India brand has signed an agreement with the UK's Pratt & Whitney to set up an EcoPower engine wash service at Mumbai International Airport.

Pratt & Whitney is a division of United Technologies Corp.

Pratt & Whitney's patented EcoPower engine wash system, says the company, reduces fuel burn by as much as 1.2 per cent, eliminating three pounds of carbon dioxide emissions for every pound of fuel saved, while also decreasing engine gas temperature which raises the amount of time an engine can stay on wing.

With this agreement, Air India will be able to perform EcoPower engine washes on various engines in its fleet of aircraft, and also offer the service to other carriers in the region.

The service centre will have the ability to perform washes on nearly all commercial engines in service today, including the PW4000, CFM56-5/-7, V2500, CF6-80C2 and GE90-100.

K M Unni, head, MRO-Airframe, Air India said,''This will help airlines reduce their operating costs and emissions."
