MTNL starts services in Mauritius

Mumbai: Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd has started basic fixed line, fixed wireless, pre and post-paid mobile and ILD services in Mauritius. MTNL is the second operator in Mauritius.

This is the government owned MTNL''s second overseas venture after Nepal.

MTNL had been granted a licence to offer fixed line, cellular and ILD licences in Mauritius in 2004. IT began by providing ISD services in June 2005 followed by fixed wireless services in some parts of the island.

Cellular services were the last introduction, which it took across Mauritius on December 15, after a soft launch some months earlier.

In Nepal MTNL provides WLL CDMA based mobile and ILD services together with Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd, Videsh Sanchar Nigam and a local Nepali company in a joint venture called United Telecom.

The company had earmarked an investment of Rs100 crore for rolling out networks in Mauritius.
