After moving several jobs to India in recent years, energy major British Gas, is likely to move more jobs there after carrying out redundancies in its office jobs in Leicestershire.

The company has announced staff cuts at its offices in Leicestershire even as it launched a 90-day consultation period with 300 staff members and employee unions, according to reports from Leicestershire.

The company did not confirm how many jobs would be lost or where they would be moved, but according to trade union Unison, they would be moved to India.

According to the company, the proposed cuts were necessary to keep gas and electricity prices low.

The Leicestershire Mercury, a leading local daily reported, a spokesperson for British Gas yesterday confirmed the job losses.

She said after having spent a significant amount of time exploring alternative options, the company had reluctantly concluded that it would be moving forward with the off-shoring of a number of non-customer facing roles from the Leicester office.
