Spiders have forced Suzuki to recall over 19,000 mid-size cars, AP reported.

According to the automaker, spider webs could clog a fuel vapour vent hose in some 2010 to 2013 Kizashi cars, cutting off air flow, which could cause deformation of the gas tank, causing cracks, fuel leaks, and possibly fires.

The recall came after seven reports about the problem.

According to Suzuki, the problem had not caused any accidents or injuries in the US.

Owners would be notified of the recalls this month.

American Suzuki Motor Corp filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2012 and ceased automobile sales in the US.

The recall comes as the second caused by spiders this year, following the April recall of 42,000 Mazda6 mid-size cars in the US with 2.5-litre engines for a similar problem.

The recalled cars are for cars made from 2010 through 2012 model years.

Suzuki will send letters to Kizashi owners, directing them to bring the vehicles to authorised service providers.

These service providers will replace the evaporative canister vent line with a new vent line that has a filter attached to it that will prevent spiders from reaching their intended destination. If the canister vent line is found to be obstructed by a spider web, the fuel tank will also be replaced.

The problem is seen only in cars made at a plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, at which Mazda once produced cars jointly with Ford Motor Co. until 2012. According to the Associated Press the yellow sac spider was the guilty arachnid – due to its attraction to hydrocarbons, and the fact that it builds webs that cause pressure to build in the fuel tank, increasing the risk of fuel leaks and fire.

The Suzuki Kizashi, a compact sedan competed with the Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Jetta and similar-sized vehicles. It sold fairly well and had been well-received by the automotive press.
