Passengers can claim refund on cancellation of any air-ticket now news
22 January 2011

Air passengers who used to lose all money booking `non-refundable' tickets can now get partial refund of the fare if they cancel their tickets up to two hours before departure.

Passengers who cancel their tickets up to two hours before the flight take-off can now get a refund of taxes, fuel surcharge, passenger service fee and user development fee.

Passengers can get refund anywhere between Rs1,300 and Rs3,800 depending on the distance of the flight, reports said.

Fuel surcharge varies from Rs1,000 for a short-haul domestic flight to Rs3,500 for a long-haul flight.

Low-cost carriers like Indigo, SpiceJet, Jet Konnect and GoAir charge Rs229 passenger service fee and Rs103 service tax.

The decision was taken after talks between airlines and the Civil Aviation Economic Advisory Council and addresses in part a long-pending demand of passengers such as lack of transparency in fares printed on ticket, high spot fares.

The working group also discussed the need to address high aviation turbine fuel taxes, airport charges, aeronautical navigational service charges and other costs that would increase fare levels.
